John V. Wood's Bio
The pediatrician told my mother when I was born that
I looked like Dick Butkus.
I've never figured out how to take that...
I was born in rural North Carolina, and resided there
for 24 years. I got smart and got out while I still had
teeth, and didn't smoke...but I moved back in 2003. I
married a wonderful schoolteacher that makes sure
I'm grounded (or at least she thinks I am...) I attended
Wake Forest University, riding the 1992
Independence Bowl wave as Bill Dooley's last
collegiate victory. As a Demon Deacon, we didn't win
much, but damn I'm glad we got that one over
Oregon 39-35... While I was at Wake, the journalism
bug bit me (What the hell was I thinking?). I worked
in college radio for a couple of years, and then
graduated into television. I liken this career to a ball
and chain; you can never get away from it.
I plyed college, semi-pro, and professional football. I
ended my career in 2002 as a member of the AF2's
Columbus WarDogs (now defunct). Damn, am I glad
I retired when I did; I lost enough in college. We went
0-16 our inaugural season.
Instead of playing now, I coach softball at Clayton
High School in Clayton, NC. I was a member of the
1989 Comet football team, winning the only state
championship in our school's history. Now, I'm back
in the blue and white, coaching alongside the man
who coached me - my hero, my mentor, my second
father - Gary Fowler. Fowler also coached the North
Carolina team in the 2009 Shrine Bowl.
I also believe in the soul...the small of a woman's
back, the hangin' curve ball, high fiber, good scotch,
that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent
over-rated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted
alone. I believe there oughtta be a Constitutional
amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated
hitter. I believe in the sweet spot...opening your
presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas
Eve, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet
kisses that last three days. Good night.
